How to back up Grounded 2 worlds and recover a lost Shared World

A crash can make a Grounded 2 Shared World vanish. RCON Hub backs up your worlds after the game saves them and puts a lost world back in its folder.

· Grounded 2 server manager

Your Grounded 2 Shared World vanished after a crash, or says you no longer have access. The game has no dedicated server, so there's no server tool to back it up for you. RCON Hub helps: its Grounded 2 Manager backs up your worlds after the game saves them, and puts a lost world back into the folder it came from. No server and no mod needed.

Why worlds go missing on Grounded 2

Grounded 2 has no dedicated server. Co-op is peer to peer, and a Shared World is kept on each player's PC.

Players on the Steam forums report the same problems again and again:

  • A Shared World no longer exists, or says you don't have access, after a crash.
  • A Shared World turns into a normal multiplayer world.
  • Friends play while the owner is away, and nobody backs up.

So the manual fix looks like this:

  • Find the save folder under Saved Games\Grounded2.
  • Remember to copy it somewhere safe after every session.
  • Copy it back by hand, with the game closed, and hope you picked the right folder.

What the game and other tools leave out

  • Nothing to connect to. Grounded 2 has no dedicated server, RCON or API, so plain RCON tools and hosting panels can't help. Grounded 2 Manager works with the save files on your own PC instead.
  • Backups are on you. Copying the save folder after every session is easy to forget. Grounded 2 Manager backs a world up after the game saves it, once it has stayed unchanged for a minute.
  • A lost world has no undo. After a crash, a Shared World can vanish or lock you out. Put it back returns a backup to the folder it came from. It may come back as a normal multiplayer world.
  • A hand copy can overwrite the wrong thing. Copying files doesn't check the game is closed or keep what's there now. Restore waits until the game is closed and backs up the current world first.
  • Game Pass hides its saves. The Xbox app owns that folder. Grounded 2 Manager backs it up but never writes into it, so you bring a world back with the game's own Import Save.

How RCON Hub fixes it

Grounded 2 Manager finds your worlds on this PC: Steam, Game Pass and a Lantern server's save folder. It backs each one up at most every 10 minutes, keeps the newest automatic backups per world and prunes the rest. You can download any backup, and a short guide covers Shared Worlds that disappeared or lost access.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Install RCON Hub. Download it from rconhub.gg and run the installer. It's free for Windows 10 and 11.
  2. Add the Grounded 2 game pack. Open RCON Hub. On Your games, click Add game, pick Grounded 2 and click Install.
  3. Check your worlds. Open the Grounded 2 card. The Worlds page lists every world it found on this PC. Nothing there? Play a world once and it shows up.
  4. Turn on automatic backups. Tick Back up worlds automatically after they change. Set how many to keep per world.
  5. Back up before a risky session. Click Back up now on any world. Each world shows when it was last backed up, or that it changed since.
  6. Restore a world. Close Grounded 2 first. Open the world's Backups list, click Restore next to the one you want, then Yes, restore it.
  7. Bring back a lost world. Gone from the list? Look under Backups of worlds that aren't here any more and click Put it back. Then start the game.
  8. On Game Pass or another PC? Click Download on the backup and use the game's own Import Save.

Stuck on a Shared World? Open My Shared World disappeared, or says I don't have access on the same page. Ask whoever played last to check their game first: the newest copy is on the last host's PC. A restored world may come back as a normal multiplayer world, so turn sharing back on in the game and add your friends again. These steps are what players report working, not an official fix from Obsidian.

Is it safe?

Yes.

  • It runs locally. RCON Hub and Grounded 2 Manager run on your own Windows PC. World backups only copy save files on that PC.
  • No injection. World backups never touch the game client or your friends' games. There's nothing for anti-cheat to flag, so they won't get anyone banned.
  • Your saves stay safe. A restore waits until the game is closed and backs up the current world first. Game Pass saves are only backed up, never written to. No accounts or passwords are needed.

It's beta software. Keep your own copy of any world you can't afford to lose.

Keep your backyard safe

One crash shouldn't cost you weeks of building. Download RCON Hub, add the Grounded 2 pack, and let every save get a backup.
