Your Isle server ignores your Game.ini settings
Changed Game.ini and your The Isle (Evrima) server ignores it, or shows 0 max players? Here's why Evrima drops settings without a word and how RCON Hub catches it.
You change a setting in Game.ini and your The Isle (Evrima) server acts as if you didn't. Or worse: it starts with 0 max players and nobody can join. Evrima drops settings it doesn't understand without a word, and it rewrites the file while it runs. RCON Hub fixes it: its The Isle Manager pack checks Game.ini before every start and tells you exactly which line the game would ignore.
Why Evrima ignores your settings
Evrima reads its settings from TheIsle/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/Game.ini. Most of them live in one section, [/Script/TheIsle.TIGameSession].
The game is strict and silent about it:
- A typo is skipped. A misspelled key does nothing, and nothing says so.
- The wrong section is skipped too. The right key under the wrong header is ignored, along with every key under a header the game doesn't know.
- Some mistakes break the server. In our test,
MaxPlayerCont(one letter off) andMaxPlayerCountin the wrong section both left the server at 0 max players, not the default. Nobody could join. - Edits while it runs get lost. The server rewrites Game.ini while it runs, for example after a setting changes over RCON, so a change you saved by hand can be gone.
- Admins, whitelist and VIPs load once. The game reads those lists only at start.
On a server on your PC there's one more: the server deletes Engine.ini when it stops cleanly. Without its Epic Online Services settings, the next start fails.
So the manual routine looks like this:
- Stop the server before every edit.
- Check every key and section name against a guide that may be out of date.
- Start it and hope the change took.
- Fix Engine.ini again when the server won't start.
What the game and other tools leave out
- No check. Neither the game nor a host panel's Game.ini editor warns you. The Isle Manager checks every key and section before each start, and blocks the start when it finds a problem, unless you choose to start anyway.
- No hint. A plain text box doesn't say what's wrong. The Isle Manager says which key is unknown, suggests the one you probably meant, and shows where a key belongs. It can move it there for you.
- No guard against the rewrite. The Isle Manager edits Game.ini only while the server is stopped. While it runs, settings with an RCON command change live instead.
- No Engine.ini fix. On your PC, The Isle Manager passes the Epic Online Services values on the launch line at every start, so a missing Engine.ini doesn't matter.
How RCON Hub fixes it
The Game settings page shows Game.ini with plain labels: the server name, players, password, growth, AI, day and night, and more. Every change is checked before it's saved. Admins, the whitelist and VIPs get their own lists, written in the right section. Keys The Isle Manager doesn't know stay in the file, and it shows them so you can check them.
Step-by-step setup
- Install RCON Hub. Download it from rconhub.gg and run the installer. It's free for Windows 10 and 11.
- Add the game pack. Open RCON Hub. On Your games, click Add game, pick The Isle and click Install.
- Set up your server. Open The Isle card. Click Install it for me to download the Evrima server (about 1.5 GB), or point it at the folder of a server you already have.
- Stop the server. Game.ini can only change while it's stopped, because the server rewrites the file while it runs.
- Open Game settings. Read the check: each problem names the key and the fix.
- Fix what it finds. Correct the typo, or let it move the key to the right section. Then save.
- Set admins, whitelist and VIPs in their own lists on the same page, and save.
- Start the server. If Game.ini still has a problem, the start is blocked and the message says why. Leave Start the server even when the check finds errors off.
Renting your server? Add it on the Servers page with SFTP or your Pterodactyl panel's file access. The Isle Manager reads and checks the rented server's Game.ini the same way.
Is it safe?
Yes.
- It runs locally. RCON Hub and The Isle Manager run on your own Windows PC.
- No injection. RCON Hub never touches the game client or your players' games, and it doesn't edit saves. It won't get anyone banned.
- Nothing is lost. Keys it doesn't know stay in the file, and backups of the Saved folder include Game.ini.
It's beta software. Back up your server's settings and data before you change things.
Settings that actually stick
Your server should run the settings you wrote. Download RCON Hub, add the Isle pack, and let the check catch what the game won't tell you. Questions go to ClanStop's Discord.
